If there is any better way to spend a chilly autumnal eve than tucked up in a cosy local pub, we have yet to hear about it. Fortunately, the historical city of Bath offers an excellent variety of pubs for visitors and residents alike to refresh their batteries and warm the cockles of their hearts.
Some even offer you the chance to fire up those brain cells with a group of friends and participate in a good old-fashioned pub quiz. You can often win the odd cash prize – though the affirmation that your team is the intellectual superior to all the other competitors should be prestige enough.
Here are five of the best places to enjoy a pub quiz in Bath – time to get those thinking caps on!
If it’s great beer you seek, then you have come to the right place. The Bath Brew House is a rustic dream, situated right in the heart of the city centre. With their own microbrewery on site, you can expect top-notch beer, tasty fresh food and a family and dog friendly environment, ideal for a quiet pint with the papers as well as a celebratory get-together with your nearest and dearest. The pub quiz takes place on Tuesdays and is hosted by Dorian, whose quiz credentials are undisputed – he has appeared on 15 to 1, University Challenge and Eggheads. First place wins cash, but there are plenty of prizes for the runners up too.
While the spacious terrace at The Cork makes it the natural choice for summery celebrations, it should not be forgotten about when the colder season sets it. With two bars, a conservatory and two party pod rooms, complete with karaoke and TV systems that can be rented by groups, the award-winning cask ale almost (but not quite) fades into the background. As well as a host of DJs, live bands, comedy acts and magicians entertaining the punters, the lively Sunday night pub quiz is a barrel of laughs too. First prize is a hefty bar tab, with a bottle of wine for the runners up – an excellent way to wind up the weekend.
Everyone in Bath who is old enough to sink a drink will have come across “The Pig” at some point. It’s something of a Bath institution with its unique, quirky décor, and offers both a cosy fire and well heated beer garden, so you can enjoy a nice bit of pub grub, whatever the weather. The food is homemade and locally sourced whenever possible – quality brain food to get your team focused. The Pig likes to put its own quirky stamp on the pub quiz too, hosting regular themed quizzes based on classic shows like Game of Thrones, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Friends.
Perched beside the famous Pulteney Bridge, with an unparalleled view of the weir, The Boater boasts Bath’s biggest beer garden, as well as a selection of stylish bars and dining areas inside. Whether you feel like soaking up the seafaring décor of the higher levels or taking it back to the 20s in the speakeasy-style cellar, there’s a range of environments in which to enjoy a tipple or two and psyche yourself up for the competition ahead. The ‘Brains of Bath’ quiz night at The Boater is every Thursday from 8pm – winner takes the cash.
Absorb the Georgian grandeur of Pulteney Street with a trip to the Pulteney Arms, a real ale drinker’s pub that regularly features in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. This is a pub for all seasons with a stoked log burner ready to see you through winter and a shady courtyard for the summer, as well as a sumptuous upstairs function room with décor that hearkens back to 19th century Bath, when high society flocked to the city to see and be seen – as well as indulge in plenty of afternoon tea. Monday night is quiz night at The Pulteney Arms; the top three teams win prize money, but don’t be discouraged if you come last – there’s a Curly Wurly waiting with your name on it.
The City of Bath knows how to spoil us with great pubs and fun nights with friends – we know how we will be spending our autumn… better start swotting up now!
