History
This is a very special and interesting property, believed to have been built in the early 1500’s, with subsequent extensions over the years. It overlooks the church and the name has reference to the Cluniac Monks of the original Priory that once stood within the village. Some original parts of the property were built from stone belonging to The Priory with the solid stone doorframes and stone mullion windows. As you would expect, the property has a wealth of character, to include the large inglenook fireplace in the living room and the exposed stone ovens in the dining room (from when used as a bakery). Over the years it has housed a bakery, a schoolroom, a poor house, an ale house and a small holding. There is a sundial on the gable wall erected in the 19th century by the Squire, indicating that the house was important in the life of the village. The property is in two parts – a pretty three bedroom cottage and an attached former post office that has recently been refurbished to provide further accommodation including 2 double bedrooms. There is ample parking, accessed from the rear drive and the cottage opens onto a lovely private garden that faces in a southerly direction.
