Searching for things to with the family this autumn in and around Bath? We’ve done the hard work for you and come up with our favourite seasonal to-dos over the coming months. From beautiful walks to pumpkin picking, scarecrow trails to apple pressing, here’s our top 5 things to do in Bath this autumn 2019 – which one will you try first?

1. Go on a scarecrow trail

Autumn is a great time to visit the wonderful Bowood Estate. October sees the launch of its Enchanted Autumn, a magical scarecrow trail of challenges and autumnal activities that takes in some of the best parts of Bowood’s extensive grounds. Pull on your wellies, wrap up warm, let the kids loose and enjoy some quality family time together.

2. Try your hand at apple pressing

Ever had a go at apple pressing? Well now you can using apples grown in the orchard at the very lovely Woolley Grange Hotel, just outside Bath in Bradford on Avon. Apple Day starts at 10am on Saturday 28 September and finishes when the apples run out! Lucky enough to have your own apple trees in the garden? Make good use of those windfall apples by turning them into delicious fresh juice yourself – Monty Don shows you how in this easy-to-watch video.

3. Enjoy the autumn colours

Beautifully laid out within a stunning landscape, Westonbirt is home to one of the finest collection of trees and shrubs in the world. And from around mid October, the arboretum is transformed into a spectacular display of reds, golds and burnt orange. Love autumn colour? Then this is definitely the place for you…one of our favourite top 5 things to do in Bath this autumn 2019.

4. Pick your own pumpkin

Picking your own pumpkin has been a cheery autumn (or should we say Fall?) tradition in the US for years and here in Britain we’ve become quite taken with the idea too. From next month, Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park will have a huge patch devoted entirely to the lovely pumpkin, with over 15,000 pumpkins to choose from. Once you’re back at home, you can then tackle the exasperating job of carving it out for the trick or treaters: but don’t worry, try one of these fail-safe pumpkin carving ideas here…and just think of that lovely bowl of hearty pumpkin soup later!

5. Ooh and aah at some fireworks

Last but by no means least, autumn of course means Bonfire Night and fireworks displays, and where better to get your fix than at the Bath Racecourse’s hugely popular Light Up Lansdown event on 1 November? One of the best fireworks nights in Bath (other fireworks displays are, of course, available – click here to find one near you), this year’s event at the Racecourse will be set to music for the very first time. Admire the huge bonfire, take a ride on the traditional funfair and sample some delicious food and drink as you watch the skies light up over Bath…
