Buying Christmas presents for the office Secret Santa or shopping for your nearest and dearest? Bath’s independent retailers have so much to offer, starting with a personal service that’s hard to match online. Whether its stocking fillers for under £10 or that extra special item (with the price tag to go with it), ditch the internet and shop local instead. Here’s our guide to Christmas shopping in Bath…

For the cheese lover…

Let’s face it, Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a decent cheese board. Indulge the cheese lover in your family with something more than a hunk of supermarket cheddar or a run-of the-mill goat’s cheese, and treat them to their very own selection from Paxton & Whitfield. Peddling cheese since 1742, this Bath institution on John Street carries a seriously impressive selection with hampers to fit every budget, starting with the Cheddar Lover’s Gift Box, right up to the Ultimate Paxton’s Collection (and at £1,000, we think it’s safe to say it definitely is the ultimate collection!). The lovely staff in the Bath shop are more than happy to guide you through the cheese maze and help you put together something bespoke to suit your beloved. The only challenge? Resisting the temptation to stock up on a decent wedge of Camembert and a baby Stilton for your own festivities…

For the book worm…

We all love a traditional spa day….but what about a Mr B’s Reading Spa? Mr B’s Emporium book shop on John Street hosts arguably the ultimate bookshop experience: over a drink and cake, you get to chat about your reading likes and dislikes with one of the knowledgeable and book-obsessed Mr B’s team members. After hand-picking a stack of books for you, you’re then left to quietly ponder which ones you’d like to take home (the Reading Spa conveniently includes a £55 book voucher). Another winning option is a Mr B Reading Subscription. Simply complete a short consultation on your recipient’s reading tastes (or let them complete this themselves), and one of the Mr B team will hand-pick a book for them every month – the book arrives through the letterbox, beautifully wrapped in the store’s signature brown paper, string and wax seal. Oh, the literary treasures that await each month…

For the spa-goer…

Speaking of spas, spa gift vouchers always go down well on Christmas Day and Bath certainly has no shortage of fabulous spa destinations to choose from. But did you know the Thermae Spa also sells its very own range of soothing massage oils, scrubs and scented aromatherapy candles? Their store on the wonderfully named Hot Bath Street opposite the Thermal Bath Spa stocks the full range, along with another favourite, Aromatherapy Associates. If you want to gain maximum brownie points, splash out on a gift voucher for a spa session and treatment and add in a couple of the Spa’s own bespoke products to wrap up with the voucher…

For the craft-lover…

The Makery’s city-centre shop just off Milsom Street stocks a great selection of craft supplies, with some quirky bespoke kits that really stand out from the crowd. There’s books and patterns covering everything from ties and bags to the ultimate date night dress, plus a superb range of own-branded make-it kits, including this mini embroidery hoop pendant kit and these fabulous make-your-own espadrilles. Can’t decide? There are gift vouchers too, which can be put towards any of the superb workshops that take place on site throughout the year. Introduce them to something new like drum lampshade making, or crochet, with the make your own wrist warmers workshop. With specialist workshops for teenagers also on offer, it doesn’t matter whether they’re an experienced crafter or someone who has never picked up a needle in their life…the ever-friendly and expert tuition guarantees they’ll produce something to be proud of and get a huge sense of achievement along the way.

For the wine connoisseur…

A mixed case of red, a select bottle of three-year-old Somerset Royal Cider Brandy or a vintage Highland malt: whatever their tipple of choice, the knowledgeable team at Great Western Wine can help you choose the perfect present. As well as selling an impressive range of fine wines, GWW also hosts over 30 events and dinners a year, some of them showcasing wine, but others focusing on gin, craft ale and even sake. With venues right across Bath, including the delightful Henry’s restaurant on Saville Row, who knows, maybe you’ll even get a night out too…

Last but not least, for the little person in your life…

If it’s beautiful, sturdy and traditional (preferably with a touch of innovation about it), then the brilliant My Small World Toy Store down in Southgate will definitely stock it! All the top brands can be found here, from Le Toy Van and Schleich to lessor known makes such as Clockwork Soldier and Fabelab. We love these super-cool ride-on-dragons (alternative flamingo option also available) and the award-winning real-life Lottie Dolls range, especially the Lottie Fossil Hunter. For older kids, there’s a plethora of arts and crafts kits to chose from, including this glitter-tastic craft box from Djeco – and that’s before we even get started on stocking fillers, all of which are guaranteed to last longer than Christmas morning, we promise. Add to the mix a genuinely fun-loving, knowledgeable and passionate team, and we can’t think of a better environment to shop toys.
